Meet Your Presenter

Amy Salerno, MS CCC-SLP has served adults as a speech-language pathologist for 8 years. Specializing in rehabilitation, she became passionate about supporting medically complex patients and those managing chronic conditions. Amy’s clinical experience became personal as her husband recovered from a brain tumor which left him with communication and swallow difficulties, solidifying her passion for person-centered care with families as integral partners.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define medical trauma, including severity levels and major contributing factors.
  2. List 3 ways to mitigate the patient's experience of trauma as it is happening.
  3. Define the effects of medical trauma of the patient and family in rehabilitation practice.

Time-ordered Agenda

  • 0:00 - Introduction to medical trauma (MT): definitions, terms, and recent research.
  • 0:10 - MT in key clinical populations including stroke, heart attack, and chronic illness
  • 0:20 - Factors which contribute to the experience of trauma in the medical setting
  • 0:30 - Intervention strategies to informally assess and manage MT in physical, occupational, and speech therapy
  • 0:40 - Case studies and video interview with a medical trauma survivor
  • 0:50 - Q/A
  • 1:00 - End course + quiz

Instructional Level

Introductory
Information is geared to practitioners with little or no knowledge of the subject matter. Focus is on providing general introductory information.

Target Audience

Rehabilitation clinicians, including speech, occupational, and physical therapists who work with adults in rehabilitation settings.

Live Course Information

This course will be presented on the Zoom platform. High-speed internet connection is required.

Recorded Course Information

The course will be available for CEUs until December 19, 2025.
