Participants will be able to summarize insufficiencies in traditional SLP training in normal and disordered swallowing, describe current SLP practice patterns and trends related to dysphagia management, and describe proposed learning solutions for improving dysphagia education and training for students and clinicians in the digital age.

Meet Your Presenter

Rinki Varindani Desai is an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist, certified brain injury specialist and certified dementia practitioner; specializing in the assessment and treatment of cognitive-linguistic and swallowing disorders in adults. She is the founder of the Medical SLP Forum, co-founder of the Swallowing Training and Education Portal learning platform, and co-creator of the Dysphagia Therapy mobile app. She currently serves as Associate Coordinator of ASHA’s Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders Special Interest Group (SIG 13) and as Co-Chair of the Dysphagia Research Society's COVID-19 Task Force. She is also a part of ASHA’s Alternative Payment Models Committee, DRS’ Annual Conference Committee and the MSHA Healthcare Committee. A recipient of seven ASHA ACE awards, Rinki was one among 30 clinicians in the US selected for ASHA’s Leadership Development Program in 2017 and for ASHA’s Faculty Development Institute in 2019. Originally an SLP from Mumbai, India; she has practiced for nearly a decade in acute, sub-acute and long-term care medical settings. She is currently the adult outpatient lead and a clinical instructor in the Department of Otolaryngology and Communicative Sciences at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Rinki has presented nationally and internationally on topics related to adult dysphagia. She enjoys reading, writing, teaching, traveling with her husband around the world, and doing what she can to help advance the profession by paying it forward.

Accreditation

  • This course qualifies for 10 CMH (certified maintenance hours). This is equivalent to one continuing education hour.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Summarize insufficiencies in traditional SLP training in normal and disordered swallowing.
  2. Describe current SLP practice patterns and trends related to dysphagia management.
