Money Management Kit

Our Money Management Kit offers a complete and practical approach to financial skills therapy. This kit includes prop money, a fake checkbook, a fake bank statement, a book of receipts, and a calculator with audio feedback to simulate real-world financial transactions. It also features a ledger notepad, an evaluation screener, and a tear-and-share notepad outlining financial scam red flags. Designed for versatility, the kit supports various activities related to budgeting, payment calculations, and financial literacy. Its real-world functionality saves therapists valuable time in planning and preparation, while the comprehensive set of related tools allows for adaptable therapy activities tailored to different cognitive levels and needs.

With this kit, you can:

• Complete a basic money management screening and obtain enough information to begin tailoring this kit to the unique needs of your individual patients. You will customize your approach depending on their level of preferred financial privacy as well as their current financial confidence.
• Practice transferring totals from receipts onto a ledger (either paper/pencil or spreadsheet) and calculating a running balance.
• Reconcile a list of expenses based on receipts with a bank statement.
• Practice doing financial mental math, including calculating and counting change based on word problems.
• Complete a basic budget analysis. This activity can be customized depending on the level of privacy that a patient wants to maintain.
• Discuss red flags for scams aimed at ripping off financial information and jeopardizing financial stability.
• Practice writing checks (yep, it’s still a thing for some of us!)

*You will need to supply this kit with 3 quarters, 3 dimes, 2 nickels, and 4 pennies. Real coins were not included as that would be a violation of federal currency law and we decided to not use plastic coins since they can come across as too childish.
