Although the term may be unfamiliar, the Valsalva maneuver is used in everyday activities such as having a bowel movement, lifting a heavy object, playing an instrument, and weightlifting. The Valsalva maneuver can be used as an exercise for the treatment of swallowing disorders called dysphagia and is one step of the Super-Supraglottic Swallow maneuver in which a person is voluntarily controlling airway closure to reduce the risk of aspiration while consuming food and/or liquid. This material provides information regarding who should use this maneuver, the rationale, contraindications, and instructions to complete this maneuver.
