The SLP’s Role with Progressive Neurological Disorders
There are many progressive neurological disorders that may be recommended to participate in skilled speech therapy. Speech therapy can address changes with speech, language, cognition/thinking, memory, voice, swallowing, reading, writing, listening, and the need for assistive communication technology and/or devices. With progressive disorders, the SLP will focus on providing education and training for using compensatory strategies to maintain current abilities instead of the traditional goal of improving overall function.
