Mentor: Colleen Smagala-DeVane, MS, CCC-SLP
Bio: After 20+ years running homeless shelters for families in California, I took a hard look at what I wanted for my final career and chose speech-language pathology. My life experience of assisting those in crisis is a very useful foundation to what I learned in graduate school and now use on a daily basis with my patients. I graduated from Portland State University in 2017, with emphasis on the adult medical population. My externships included an ALS clinic, outpatient clinic with focus on head/neck cancer patients and administering MBSS. I completed my CF at a well-respected SNF where I have happily remained. I am currently the clinical supervisor for a 2nd year student who graduates in May.
Current primary professional role: Speech-language pathologist.
Discipline: Medical SLP
State license: Washington: LL60876895
ASHA license: 14280982
Areas of Expertise: LVST Certified, Cog rehab with focus on functional prob solving/safety and fall risk prevention, caregiver/nursing education for dementia patients, MDTP certified.
Teaching philosophy: I believe that starting over again at 50 provides me with a unique perspective on having to learn and stretch and grow at the point of my life when others are content to sit back and say, “that’s enough.” I am passionate about encouraging others to do the same, including my patients, my co-workers, and the students who I mentor and supervise. I believe in striving for authenticity in my feedback and am generous with my time and knowledge.
Preferred communication methods: Texting, email and online video.
