Feeding Babies from Birth-12 Months

A lot changes in the first year of life, particularly when it comes to feeding and swallowing! This course will dive into the progression of the different phases of feeding and swallowing from birth to 12 months. The course will also discuss in utero swallowing, including basic anatomy and physiology. The course will cover the reflexes involved in feeding/swallowing within the first year of life, covering techniques for both breast and bottle feeders, and will explore the progression of transitioning from purees to solids and from breast/bottle to cup drinking.
Allison Stamm graduated in 2001 from New York University with a Master's Degree in Speech Pathology. She began working with babies in a level 1 NICU in Queens, NY. When she moved to Boulder, Colorado in 2007, she went back for further training at Metro State in lactation counseling while working in outpatient pediatrics with 0-2 population for feeding and swallowing disorders. She currently works in an acute care hospital and sees babies in their level 2 NICU. She is also a private consultant for feeding evaluations and treatment in the home, with a specific focus on birth-12 months.

Instructional level: Intermediate (Information is geared to practitioners with a general working knowledge of current practice trends and literature related to the subject matter. Focus is on increasing understanding and competent application of the subject matter.)

As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to
- Chronologically order the phases of feeding and swallowing in the first year of life.
- Explain in utero swallowing, including basic anatomy and physiology.
- List the reflexes as they pertain to feeding.
- Describe feeding techniques for both breast and bottle feeders.
- Summarize the progression of solid foods and cup drinking.
