Beat the Beat: Rhythm-Based Intervention for Communication Disorders
Course description: There is a growing body of evidence indicating connections between music and language abilities. Functional neuroimaging allows us to study the relations more systematically. This course was designed to offer an overview of the research in this emerging discipline, and a sample of the variety of applications for speech/language interventions of clinical and aging populations.

Dr. Lee received his Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience from Dartmouth College and postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania. He is currently an assistant professor at School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas. He conducts several funded research programs that aim to develop music-based intervention programs for communication disorders due to brain injury and neurodegeneration.
Duration: 1 hour.
Target audience: Speech-language pathologists who are providing therapy for people who have aphasia.

As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to...
- Students will understand how the brain processes both low-level (e.g., acoustic properties) and high-order aspects (e.g., meaning) of sound in speech, language, and music.
- Students will gain appreciation for how musicality affects speech and language performance.
- Students will become familiar with a wide variety of settings in which music is used to improve speech and language functions. By the end of the course, students will learn various music-based intervention programs for speech/language impairments secondary to neurological/developmental disorders.
- This course will be presented on the Zoom platform.
- High-speed internet connection is required.
