Therapists are informed of the impact of sleep disturbances on persons with dementia and their caregivers. Current evidence supporting non-pharmacological interventions and research supporting non-pharmacological interventions for sleep and how those may be incorporated into occupational therapy treatment planning for community-dwelling persons with dementia and their caregivers will be provided.

Meet Your Presenter

Dr. Lloyd received her Masters of Occupational Therapy from Idaho State University in 2004 and completed her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from Rocky Mountain University in 2019. Dr. Lloyd has 16+ years clinical experience and 9 years of full-time experience in higher education. She is currently the Chair of the Admission Committee and an adjunct professor and capstone reviewer at Rocky Mountain University. She has significant experience with community-based programs including Baby Boomers, Humpty Dumpty, Thomas Geriatric Symposium and assisted in creating the Bengal Experience an ADL/IADL summer camp for prospective college students with disabilities. Dr. Lloyd is the co-founder and CEO of POTEN, a company that manages research and adaptive devices for individuals with disabilities looking to age in place.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the importance of addressing sleep in persons with dementia and their caregivers.
  2. Identify the impact of sleep quality disruptions in not only the person with dementia but also his/her caregiver.
  3. Summarize current evidence regarding non-pharmacological interventions for sleep in persons with dementia and their caregivers.
  4. Identify when to refer to occupational therapy to intervene to improve the occupation of sleep with persons with dementia and their caregivers.

Information is geared to practitioners with a general working knowledge of current practice trends and literature related to the subject matter. Focus is on increasing understanding and competent application of the subject matter.

Target Audience

Rehabilitation clinicians, including occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, and speech therapists that work in outpatient, skilled inpatient rehabilitation, home health and acute care settings.
