Cultural competemility is the marriage between cultural competency and cultural humility. This course will define “culture” as a concept, define the ethics of cultural competence, explain the difference between cultural competence and cultural humility, and identify ways cultural competence and cultural humility coincide within the context of providing speech-language pathology services.

Meet Your Presenter

Melanie Y. Evans, M.S. CCC-SLP is an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist licensed to practice in Texas and Oklahoma. She is also the CEO of Melanie Y. Evans - SLP LLC (DBA Pediatric Speech Sister), whose mission is to assist other speech-language pathologists on their journey toward cultural competency. Melanie dedicates her career to closing the academic achievement gap through culturally responsive speech-language and educational interventions.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define “culture” as a concept.
  2. Define the ethics of cultural competence.
  3. Explain the difference between cultural competence and cultural humility.
  4. Identify ways cultural competence and cultural humility coincide.
  5. Describe at least 3 ways cultural competemility can be practiced in our field.

Introductory
Information is geared to practitioners with little or no knowledge of the subject matter. Focus is on providing general introductory information.

Target Audience

SLPs who work with children and/or adults.

This course will be presented on the Zoom platform. High-speed internet connection is required.

This course will be available for CEUs until December 17, 2027.
