Course Webinar: Transgender-Affirmative Care: Identifying and Overcoming Barriers to Care for Transgender Patients

Description: Transgender individuals, often highly stigmatized and discriminated against, face multiple barriers when it comes to being affirmed within their gender identity.  A particularly challenging barrier regards seeking routine- and transition-related physical and mental health care. The purpose of this course is to provide easily consumable, evidence-based content that addresses basic transgender terminology, barriers to care transgender individuals currently (and historically) face, and affirmative approaches to routine care and transition support.

Presented by Oak Reed, MA

Originally presented: Thursday, September 17, 2020

Oak Reed earned his BS in psychology and sociology from Central Michigan University, his MA in clinical psychology from the University of Montana, and is currently a 6th year doctoral candidate at UM. He is completing his residency at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center with a focus on behavioral medicine. His primary research interests include analyzing motivations and impacts of anti-transgender prejudices and investigating barriers to care seeking among transgender individuals. Oak's Master's Thesis investigated the impact contact with transgender individuals has on decreasing prejudices, and his Dissertation is currently investigating the impact trans-affirmative care trainings has on health care providers competence and confidence in delivering adequate care. In addition, Oak has published both empirical and theoretical articles, book chapters, and book reviews on LGBT topics. Additionally, he has been invited to lecture on his research findings in university classrooms, provide didactic trainings in health care settings on transgender-affirmative care, and present research at national conferences. Oak is excited to continue sharing his knowledge with professionals working to provide trans-affirmative care!
