Using The Science of Habits To Promote Healthy Behaviors Across Practice Settings
Chronic diseases are on the rise, and occupational therapists can play a crucial role in addressing the primary risk factor for developing chronic diseases, personal behaviors. These personal behaviors, otherwise known as performance patterns, include habits, routines, rituals, and roles. Performance patterns can either support or hinder occupational performance and play a significant role in preventing and managing chronic diseases. This course will review the vital role of habits in daily behavior, behavior change techniques, and how to measure habits across practice settings. In addition, this course will provide participants with evidence-based interventions within the scope of occupational therapy to change existing habits and establish new habits to promote healthy occupational engagement using the client’s natural context and environment.

Course designed for: Occupational therapists working with adults in rehabilitation settings.
John (Johnny) Rider is an assistant professor at Touro University Nevada in Henderson, Nevada. He has worked in a variety of settings, including school-based, home health and hospice, acute and post-acute rehabilitation, and orthopedic and neurological outpatient clinics. He is also a nationally certified American Sign Language interpreter specializing in medical and mental health interpreting. He has a passion for chronic disease management and lifestyle interventions and the unique contribution of occupational therapy. He is currently in the dissertation phase for a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences with an emphasis on rehabilitation science at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
